“SARAH LIVED a hundred and twenty-seven years; these were the years of the life of Sarah. And Sarah died at Kiriath-arba (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan; and Abraham went in to mourn for Sarah and to weep for her. And Abraham rose up from before his dead, and said to the Hittites, "I am a stranger and a sojourner among you; give me property among you for a burying place, that I may bury my dead out of my sight." Genesis 23:1-4
AN AFTERNOON stroll in the warm summer Saturday breeze brought me to appreciate echoes of history. History repeats it seems, and stories are retold again and again. This maxim came to mind as I viewed a sample of the early ‘50s. I really don’t know to this day what drew my attention to the display. The car is certainly not my present style. I now view myself as a rather sedate, responsible, and steady man, and this Chevy had enjoyed a rather racy family image in the early ‘50s. And it seemed too feminine for certain, for the sun visor said that she had a bit too much green around the eyes, not like the subtle makeup that shadowed my wife’s mysterious cinnamon gaze when we first met. The owner of the vintage yellow Chevy sat quietly resting in a folding chair behind the rear bumper. As I peered into the car, I noticed through a side glance and nod, that even his chair was dated to match the car by the sewn cloth stripes stagger-weaved in a yellow and green checkered pattern. He was an elderly gentleman dressed in white slacks and white golf |

shoes. He appeared graceful as he sat there sporting a pure white goatee. He wore a yellow, short-sleeve sport shirt that perfectly matched the body color |

on the car. I noticed that his wide-brimmed, straw hat could have covered the brow of a ‘50s era Life or Time magazine model. He even had a green hat band that matched the vehicle’s trim. In my mind I thought… “This is an example of someone showing class in the displaying of a car.” The sedate, yet sassy Chevrolet sat bathing and glimmering yellow paint beneath the afternoon sun, looking much like it should be parked alongside a seaside golf course sand dune. As I peered into the shadows behind the driver’s door, I noticed the wide steering wheel cracked slightly with age. I’d also noticed the originality on all |
